Birthday Blog

Dear Friends

In reverse order for my birthday, I had dinner at Denny's (free grand slam), bought a new blood pressure monitor (40% off at CVS thanks to Kathleen's coupon) got my pneumonia vaccination (part 1), attended a family reunion lunch (thank you Taco Man) and went for an early morning drive to Garden Grove for the 60th Annual Strawberry Stomp 5k (where I met Miss Strawberry; I asked for a picture with her because I couldn't track down Miss Garden Grove!)

While I used to run 5k's in the low 20's, my finishing time is now in the high 30's. And while age groups are usually in 5 year increments, today I had to compete with runners from 60 to 69. So turning 67 today, I am proud to say I finished 9th of 18 runners in my age group, which may have included people as young as 60!

This reminds me of Ty Cobb who, when he was 70, was asked by a reporter "What do you think you'd hit if you were playing these days?" A lifetime .367 batter, he answered "About .290---maybe .300"  The reporter said, "That's because of the travel, the night games, the artificial turf, and all the new pitches like the slider, right?" "No" said Cobb, "it's because I'm 70".

Today I thank God for 67 years of life. I may not be running in the low 20's anymore, but the blessings have not slowed down. And the best of the blessings are all the people who have been and continue to be a blessing in my life.

Now it's on to 70, but of course there are no guarantees. So as a  daily greeting we might share with each other puts it,

"ENJOY TODAY".

John
