Saint for our times

Dear Friends

Yesterday, I got my temporary, non-resident library card and checked out "The Spirit of Father Damien---Leper Priest---A Saint for Our Times". I am anxious to begin reading this book, published in 2010. More than a biography, it uses his life to speak to current issues we face. One of the chapter titles is "Love overcomes many boundaries".

In response to another disgusting tweet today from the person who wants to continue to be The President of the United States, a news anchor who was born and grew up in Baltimore broke down as he tried to respond. You could feel his pain. In the segment about today's tweet, he also shared this 2014 tweet from you know who, which, because of the book I checked out, caught my attention:

Why are we sending thousands of ill trained soldiers into Ebola infested areas of Africa!
Bring the plague back to the U.S.?
Obama is so stupid.

How people who say the bible is their guide and that Jesus is their Lord and Savior can continue to support this man, if not by their adoration, but, for many more, by their silence, continues to be a mystery to me. And, apart from their faith, do they no longer believe that "character counts"?

In the meantime, while many others work (get "souls to the polls"*, Presiding Bishop Curry recently said) and pray that by November 2020, these in-your-face attacks on the soul of our nation will lose its biggest and loudest megaphone, let us remember and rejoice in God's saints, like Father Damien, who give us examples of the way we should try to live.

May the saints of our time be heard loudly and clearly, above the voice of hate, fear and ignorance, currently coming from the oval office, which daily pollutes and poisons this "sweet land of liberty".

John

*I would add also, make your "calls to the halls", that is the halls of Congress.
